MARK #50 Cover contest

The fiftieth issue of Mark magazine will be out on 1 June 2014. To celebrate the occasion, Mark has organized a design competition for the cover of Mark #50, open to all interested parties: architects, graphic designers and other creative people.

The winning design will be used for the cover of Mark #50, and winner’s name will be featured in the colophon. The jury report will appear in the same issue. Material available for participants included cover photography, cover template, masthead and the Mark logo. The masthead and logo must be included in the cover design. Cover photography and template may be used as desired. Above my proposal for the contest, for which I used the interesting photos by Sergio Pirrone. More info on the competition here.

Laser Cat: PEW PEW!

I am very thrilled and honoured to have my artwork shown at
Laser Cat Miami together with some of the coolest creatives on Planet Earth, including: Stefan Sagmeister, Milton Glaser, Banksy, David Lynch, James Victore, David O’Reilly, Tara McPherson... Many thanks to Hungry Castle and ADCGlobal

Laser Cat is back from Hungry Castle on Vimeo.

Laser Cat is a giant art installation that will be part of the ADC 93rd Annual Awards + Festival of Art and Craft in Advertising and Design. A giant cat with 'lasers' for eyes that uses high powered projectors to beam amazing atworks onto walls, buildings... and perhaps even the moon! At the very least, Laser Cat and its projections will reside in the Bass Museum of Art, one of the prime venues of the world famous Art Basel Miami Beach.

I SEE Alternatives" in "I SEE Emptiness" proponendo immagini

More Info @ blumagenta.com.

Assume Crash Position

Bracing or crash position is an instruction that can be given to prepare for a crash, such as on an aircraft. When an emergency landing is taken place on an airplane before landing on land or water, the Captain would say "Brace for impact" or "Brace brace!" and passengers on board must adopt the brace position.

The brace position is one of the key elements for survival in a plane crash; unfortunately, it is not demonstrated in all in-flight safety demonstrations.
In the event of an emergency landing, it is standard procedure that the cabin crew will demonstrate how to adopt the brace position before the emergency landing. However, crashes are often unexpected, so you cannot rely on this alone. There are many different ways to adopt the brace position, with many countries adopting their own version based on research performed by their own aviation authority or that of other countries.
There have been myths surrounding the use of the brace procedure namely that adopting the brace procedure is only useful for preserving dental integrity for identification after a crash. Another myth is that the position is designed to increase the chance of death to reduce insurance-paid medical cost. Instances where the brace procedure has been adopted have been shown to save lives.

HOW TO ASSUME THE BRACE POSITION: 1. Ensure your seatbelt is securely fastened.
2. Bend your body forward so that your head is down around your knees. 3. Link your arms together behind or around your legs to stop them from moving forward during impact. 4. Keep your head down.
5. Push your feet back past your knees and keep them flat on the floor.

This Machine Changes Lives

"For some, bicycles are an essential accessory to achieving ultimate hipness. For others, bikes provide healthy and affordable transportation to work and play. For students, health care workers, and business owners in Africa, bikes are vehicles to better healthcare, education, and economic opportunities."

I have recently took part in a design contest promoted by Threadless for a very, very good cause: the World Bicycle Relief mission. Since 2005, World Bicycle Relief has distributed more than 120,000 bicycles. Those bikes have benefited more than 600,000 individuals by shortening travel time to clean water, education, healthcare, markets, and jobs. Bicycles improve access to education, health care and economic opportunity by increasing carrying capacity and accessible travel distance while decreasing the time it takes to commute to and from schools, clinics and markets. For every 10 miles traveled, a bicycle saves 3 hours of valuable time. Riding a bicycle increase an individual’s capacity by 5x. An individual can ride a bicycle 4x the distance as someone walking.
The inspiration for this design came from the "This Machine Kills Fascists" notorious sticker on Woody Guthrie's guitars and I created a bike-themed design for a messenger bag and t-shirt aroud the slogan: "This Machine Changes Lives" (very true, especially in this case!)

12 April 2012: IKEA drops Chinese Suppliers
in favour of Italian Manufacturers.

Swedish furniture giant, IKEA, has said it will be closing several plants in China and Malaysia as the company sought to expand its investment in Italy. According to IKEA, the decision was motivated by cost savings, as Italian manufacturers are able to produce better quality goods at lower prices... Projections show that by the end of 2012, Italy will produce 8 percent of all IKEA products, making Italy the company’s third largest supplier after China and Poland.

"The company is permanently seeking to increase its purchases from Italian suppliers and it has found new Italian partners that substitute some Asian suppliers thanks to their skills, commitment and ability to produce goods with better quality and lower prices than Asian competitors."
Lars Petersson - CEO of IKEA Italy

Referring to risks for the company, Petersson provided this overview: "Article 18 is not a problem for IKEA. Rather, it is the unpredictable nature of the Italian bureaucracy, and its politics."

Few days ago I read this quite odd article about Ikea moving part of its Asian production to Italyfrom which came the idea of doing a fake AD for Ikea, based on the concept: "subverting cliches".
A quick and dirty one-day-task but a lot of fun in the making.
